With free rent, the rest doesn't matter, IMHO, since it's the high rents that really kicks everyone over into the poor zone. If you didn't have to pay rent, you could probably afford to even live on minimum wage.

I don't know. With only $3,000 with cell phone and car payment then I'm thinking his entertainment budget will be pretty small for a young guy in Waikiki. We'll know when he changes his name from Blue Bear to Blue B****. Well, you know.

Depends on his age. If he's in his 20's and clearing $3,000 after housing expense he should have a fairly impressive chunk of cash to impress the ladies.
If he's in his 40's... well, then you're probably right.
Do you do all your grocery shopping at ABC stores?
Which groceries specifically cost 3 times more on Oahu vs on the mainland?
3x is a bit of an exaggeration. I lived on Maui for a long time but now I live in Portland, OR. Here we have so many stores to choose from, many with much better prices than the national chains.
From what I hear I would guess food prices are more similar to Manhattan than Oregon.

Bay Area would be a better example. My personal experience to the Bay Area is the typical basket of food is about 10-15% more expensive in Honolulu rather than San Francisco.
Manhattan isn't really comparable as you don't typically have large grocery stores in Mahatttan like you do in Honolulu (Safeway, Times, Foodland, Walmart).
I don't really find groceries all that much cheaper in Portland compared to the Bay Area and the savings come into play due to no sales tax.
