I am in southern CA and my daily commute is 50-60 mins to get to work 11 miles away. But my friends have told me 50-60 mins of traffic is eternity on the islands.
Sure, the commute is doable on a short term basis. Thousands of people do it on a long term basis as well.

School is ending soon for University of Hawaii and Public/Private Schools. Traffic usually eases considerably from about now (Mid-May) until early August.

If they offer 6 month leases might as well go for it, 6 months will go by fairly fast.

I think that Kapilina is a good place to set up shop while you are figuring things out. The amenities are nice. The beach is nice. The gym and the pool are really, really nice, like resort level nice. Actually better than a lot of the Waikiki resorts, because it's all new. The housing is old military housing that has been spruced up. If you are really going to move here, I would try to initiate your lease during off peak moving months. They get pretty proud of their available units around now, May-June time frame. If you are going to be working in Aiea, it might actually be a better commute from the windward side. If you are thinking that you would want to live on the windward side, it would probably make a lot of sense to rent over there at first. There seems to be a good bit of difference in day to day life over here vs. over there. For example, traffic is pretty hectic over here during the week, but it's bad like the North Shore over there on the weekend. I think if I lived over on there, I would be trying to get all my errands handled during the week so I wouldn't have to drive too much during the weekend. That's just how I see it after being here a year. Good luck. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

BTW, I really think it takes longer than six months to start seeing Hawaii for what it really is. I guess that may vary depending on how much time you spend in an office, focused on a screen vs. being out seeing stuff.

I am so looking forward to school being out. It will make going to work seem like a vacation.
