I'm curious to see the survey wording for these questions (it could be in the article, but NYT is behind a paywall) as I know that can greatly influence the kind of answers received.
In any case, if this is the correct sentiment of residents, I think this would be a case of not missing the water until the well runs dry. Still, considering that the proverbial well is already suffering, and many businesses closing as a result, the survey answers do surprise me quite a bit.

This article was of interest to me because I feel like we are being inundated by tourists on Maui right now. My income is not dependent upon tourism so on a personal note, I would prefer they stayed home. (Traffic has been especially bad lately.)
At the same time I understand that many people in Hawaii are dependent upon income from tourism and I hate to see them suffer.
This article wasn't behind a paywall for me. (Some are, some aren't.) Not sure why it was for you. Did you actually click on it to check?

It's behind a paywall for me. I know that NYT lets you view a few articles a month for free. I guess I just reached that limit for March already
Edit: checking further, the message is specifically is reading "create your free account or log in to continue reading." I wonder how many more "free" articles that option would give.

I moved this topic to a new thread.
May I suggest that you open an In-Private window on your computer and then enter the article title (copy and paste). You should be able to get past the paywall that way.

My income is not at all dependent on tourists either. But, i think it would be very short-sighted to wish the tourists away to have a little less traffic.
I would hate to imagine what the infrastructure would look like on the islands without tourists dollars.
The roads would be worse, there would be less dining choices. The parks would be less maintained, with less facilities and access. The list goes on and on. I am not sure maintaining my non-tourist related income will help much with that.
I like the tourists subsidizing a better quality of life for all of us. A transition to a more diverse economy would be a welcome change. But, that transition is going be a long time coming, I suspect.
I'm a big fan of Hawaii -- Kauai and Maui, especially.
I'm also a big fan of the NYT paywall -- it's how I can afford to be a big fan of Hawaii.
