I am in the Millitary moving to Oahu and I am trying to figure out which area I want to live in. I have looked at the state school site but that is all politics can any give me some advice about which schools are considered good and which ones to stay away from. My daughter is in the 11th Grade and enjoys the Drama club.

i would suggest sending your child to one of the many Christian/Catholic schools here on Oahu. they range from 4000 to 8000 a year, very affordable.

General note: schools in Hawaii are always rated as being behind most mainland schools. Behind in the Teaching criteria for the grades they are in.

Schools in Ewa Beach area has the most fights per school year than the other school districts.

Radford High school has problems between the local girls and the blacks in that school. Articles from Thehonoluluadvertiser.com from the past couple of years will confirm it.

If you want your daughter to have the best opportunities for a better future then I would send her to Punahou school, Kamehahameha School, Iolani School, or Maryknoll school which are higher priced private institutions. These schools have High "makamaka" name association as well as alot of graduates from these schools attend well to do colleges on the mainland. These schools can provide better opportunities for your child when she is ready to enter the work force.

Kamehameha school allows anyone to attend their schools, but gives preference for first enrollments to Hawaiian ancestry children, maximum enrollment by Hawaiian children has NEVER been met and this means anyones child can attend Kamehameha schools if you have enough money to pay for it and your child will need to pass there entrance exam. Exams are based on intelligence, personality, optimism for excellence and if your child has experience with being a volunteer and doing volunteer work in the community, it will help her out alot to attend any of the private institutions. The other way to get preference at Kamehameha is to excel in sports, Kamehameha loves winning sports championships.

The only thing that makes Kamehameha different from other schools is that they offer tuition to Hawaiian children only with a strict bias on the entrance exam.
other than that, they are a top notch school here in Hawaii.

E kala mai, but all of your information is not correct. There are many Hawaiian children on waiting lists for all of the campus KS schools. Also, the tuition is the same for every child who enrolls, except for those who receive financial aid. Lastly, KS does do well in sports, but preference is not given for children who excel in sports. What you are correct about is the quality of the program. Please don't give people from the mainland false information.

i do not believe i am wrong. Kamehameha is like any other prep school. they give preference to people who excel in sport, and for that matter, KS give preference to people who know the examiners, over people who don't. i am not giving false information, auntie!

this is very true. all prep schools recruit top quality athletes. Kamehameha is the same as Iolani, Damian, Punahou and St Louis. The coaches from the prep schools do recruit public schools for kids who excel in sports. How do you think they won so many championships threw out the years. The preps schools do have a scholarships programs. Don'tcha know...

i talked to the ladies in the financial office by church in town. they told me enrollments is never full for the Oahu campus and even ask if my kids want to attend KS.

The waiting list is because alot of Hawaiian children don't score high enough to make it into KS. hence Hawaiian enrollment in KS if never full.

i know that the elementary/intermediate level schools always has a waiting list but the high schools doesn't.

I also know of Children who pass the exam but can't afford to send the kids to KS because they make more money than the qualifying amount to receive financial aide. So one kids goes to KS and the other siblings don't.

I advise the poster to check it out for themself at Kamehameha Schools Please check out the link to "Admissions Policies/Preferences." Everyone is invited to apply. There is absolutely no way you could know whether or not a school has a waiting list because that information is never released to the public. Whomever is telling you this is giving you misinformation.

Kamehameha is a very special school to the Hawaiian people. Our dear Princess Pauahi left a will and trust to further the well being of Hawaiians.
