Are the highschool kids accepting of Mainland kids? Does anyone know about how much a condo/apt preferably furnished would cost? I want newer or remodeled.

I don't know about Oahu, but I'm moving to Hilo on the BI and have found very reasonable prices for renting. For a 3 bedrooms/2 bath that is completely furnished (right down to the utensils, pots/pans, linens) and has electricity/gas/water/cable/local phone/internet included I will be paying $1050 a month. That is even cheaper then the 3 bedroom home and all the bills in the small Illinois town I am coming from. I saw many different options like this when I was looking - and even some reasonable ones for other islands. Look in craigslist for Hawaii.
As far as the kids/schools go, I truely believe success depends largely on the attitude of the newcomers. As I told my own daughter, if they go in to the new school expecting the other kids to treat them special or different because they are from the mainland - well they will get what they ask for, but it wont be in a good way. If instead, they go in ready to learn about the new culture and open to change (which is emminent there - or anywhere new for that matter) they will have a much better experience. It all depends on the person. Good luck and I hope you have a fantastic experience!

I think they're pretty accepting. I just grad in 07 and I didnt have a problem with people, and the ones I befriended were from Korea and the Mainland as well. It is mostly about attitude, if theyre nice and willing to make friends, then people will be accepting of them.

As for the house situation, go on Craigslist. That's a good bet. It depends on how many rooms, where you want to live, and all that kind of stuff though.

If you're inquiring about Oahu and public schools, I would look into the following high school districts: Radford, Kalaheo and Kaiser.

I don't think Kaiser is a very good school, but it's a lot better than most other Oahu high schools. Outside of Radford and Kalaheo, Kaiser's student body has more students from the Mainland than most other Oahu public high schools too.

Stay on the east side of the island and you'll enjoy living on Oahu. The east side high schools are two of the best as well which should not be a surprise given how the east side is more affluent.

All the public schools in Hawaii are in the same "district" since they are all state funded. You can't move to a nice area and get a better school. If you want the best schools, they are the private ones but those aren't cheap.

All the schools have the same funding, but I still think there are "better" public schools. Some schools have students who's parents are more involved, where the students are more likely to go to college, where there is less "acting out" by students, etc. so there is a difference, IMHO.
