I'm getting stationed at Hickam in late July, and I have the sweetest, most well behaved dog ever...an 80lb rottweiler. I'm having the hardest time finding a place that will let me move in with her, and I'm at the end of my rope. Can anyone help me find a place...I'll be devistated if I have to get rid of her.

Tough thing to find! What has happened (all over, not just Hawaii) is that insurance companies are refusing to cover landlords for any issues (bites, primarily) that certain breeds of dogs may cause. Rottweillers and dobermans and pit bulls are at the top of the lists of NO WAY.

I wonder if a prospective tenant having adequate (i.e., huge) personal liability insurance would make a landlord more likely to be willing to accept a dog?

I feel for you. So many of the dog breeds with bad reputations are really quite lovely animals. Good luck!

It's probably as much that she's a big dog as the specific breed. We have a 50 lb mutt, and we had a heck of a time finding a place that would take her (along with two cats).

Some suggestions:

It's pretty cheap, and you get lots of pet-friendly listings.

If you're being stationed here, isn't there some help with housing you can tap into? Make some calls.

Have you done all of the necessary work have her directly released at the airport? If not, you'll either need to leave her with friends until she's ready for direct release or have her quarantined here. In either case, you have the opportunity to arrive and find a place while you're here, which is always easier.

One thing that's tough is many landlords want to meet the pet, which isn't possible for you now. If you've been renting with her elsewhere, can you get a reference from your current landlord? If you offer that, it might ease some minds.

Best of luck.
