we're looking for a place to rent in oahu and have been using craigslist, starbulletin and honoluluadvertiser

OK, I'll play nicely: You'll have better luck trying searches in the "newer" newspaper, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, since those older papers merged 2 years ago.
i found my rental unit, that i just moved in to, after not having much luck on craigslist(most of the time people would not respond to calls/emails) using the iphone app zillow.
also i would set up another email just for craigslist/zillow so if you do get spam its only in your throw away account.
Need a credit history? It's needed to rent or buy almost anywhere, opt out after 3 days when it is no longer free it is free for 3 days costs you nothing not one penny, after 3 days your card will be charged, so just cancel within 3 days, there, that is 99.99% of Craigslist so called Scams avoided. Huge Secret - people are paid $25 when you fail to opt out within 3 days Amazing % of people fail to do so & rightly so - they blame nobody & do nothing.
That is the most common Craigslist "Scam" people fail to opt out of what is clearly stated ' you will be charged if you do not opt out within 3 days'.
Ignore Craigslist responses that ask you to pay anything per paypal, ect. Say you will stop by in person to pay anything & jugde by response, ect. Dang, the net can be nasty/dangerous- I just hate that!
