I would like to get an idea of some of the outdoor activities that are available on Oahu. I assume going to the beach, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and hiking are on this list. But are there also easily accessible places such as:

1. bike trails/paths - places not on a major road/highway where a family (with children) could take a leisurely ride

2. tennis courts - free or do you have to belong to a country club?

3. anywhere for roller skating?

4. jogging/running/walking - relatively flat? maybe on the beach? other paths?

5. are there many playgrounds or parks for kids?

Other outdoor activities that I have not mentioned? Thanks very much!

We will also have access to the military installations - wondering if there are tennis courts, biking/running paths, etc. Thanks!

I know that Schofield & Wheeler have some lovely tennis courts, Hickam used to have them-but I have not been to them in years so I do not know if they are still there. C&C also have free courts around the island. The one at Ala Moana Beach park are nice but I would not use them at night.

There are so many places for running/walking/biking and depending upon where you live there may be these trail/paths in your housing area.

Where will you be living? I do not wish to recommend an area that is far from your neighborhood.

I am not sure yet, but I will be working downtown. Hoping to live within 15-20 minutes of work.

Fifteen to twenty minutes from work when working downtown means you are living downtown, too.

Ala Moana beach park has free tennis courts with a beach for swimming, lots of room for walking/jogging, etc. Ala Moana is a good beach for beginners since it has a protected shore and little to no waves. All along the waterfront has walking/jogging paths - pretty much from Diamond Head to Aloha Tower is parks interspersed with bits of commercial areas.
