Can we start a movement to get a Trader Joe's to move to Hawaii. Everytime we shop at any Trader Joe's in Calif. we always ask them why they haven't opened a store in Hawaii seeing as they carry the Island theme and their employees wear aloha shirts. Maybe emails to the corporate office asking them to come to Hawaii?

Why do we need yet another mainland chain store coming onto our islands sucking what little money we have off to mainland corporate offices? Shop at your local farmer's market or local mom-n-pop shop. They provide better jobs than corporate retail chains do and they give more to the community than corporate chain stores do, too.

Oh how I loved my TJs. I understand the backlash, but much of what they carry isn't available here on Maui, so we go without, but we can dream can't we?

I love Trader Joe's, but also understand why people don't want more mainland chains.

If you really want it, start a facebook fan page about it. It worked for Betty White's fans!

I agree with this.

No, Minimum wage jobs at 19 hours a week isn't a better job than what the chain stores offer. The chain stores at least offer a chance to get into supervisor and management positions. You don't get that opportunity at mom and pop's store - you can't take their job.

I want a Trader Joe's here, too! That and In and out burgers. I still have yet to visit a Target store, and hopefully one day I can get to the one out of town.

A friend and I drove to the other side of the island after Target opened to see how it was and we were disappointed. Target is the same as Walmart except with more pink merchandise. K-Mart, Walmart, Target all same same. Lowe's - Home DePot all same same, too.

We don't really need a Trader Joe's on the Big Island, since we already have Island Naturals (http://www.islandnaturals.com/retailer/store_templates/shell_id_1.asp?storeID=TL9RXVTFXA4G9HPRAPLX31KPWEF V38G6 - broken link) which carries many of the same products. Similarly, we have Cost-U-Less (http://www.costuless.com/index.php - broken link) as an alternative to Costco and Sam's Club, and HPM as an alternative to Home Depot and Lowe's.

Instead of trying to encourage Trader Joe's to open in Hawai'i, why not support and encourage Island Naturals to expand to O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i, and the mainland?
