I'm reading studies that west central FL is prone to sink holes, more so than any other part of FL, and FL has more than the entire country! Holy crap, it was starting to sound like a great retirement destination other than this. But maybe you local Ocala/Dunnellon folks can shed some light on just how prevalent it is. Do you know of anyone that has experienced a sink hole, even if you have not yourself directly experienced an issue with one?

It is a risk you have to assume. Just like weather related problems. Hard to get ins. Stay away fro lots near ponds.
Find a house, then see if you think sink holes are a problem.

Sinkholes can happen almost anywhere in the US. The Bay Area, CA had some recently, NY has had them. You have to go to the southern part of Naples to hit areas that are less susceptible to them. I can't remember the URL, but if you search for it on CD you'll probably come up with the post that gave the addy.

Some time ago when the issue of sinkholes came up on City-Data, someone kindly provided this map. It's a keeper.

And if you decide to compare your findings in Florida with another state such as the San Francisco, CA area - there is no comparison.
