I had the same reaction as you before I dealt with it first hand; so, forget it, case closed.

Kamms is right.....it does happen......but IMO, that is not always a bad thing.

When my grandmother, in her late 80's, broke her arm, they did surgery to insert a pin. She threw a blood clot and had a major stroke.

I will never forget her eyes, they were spinning in different directions.....reminded be of a pinball machine on "TILT". Major brain damage, she was comatose and never going to recover.

My father {her son}, told me he was approached by a doctor in the hall that day, who asked him if he would like it to be over, instead of my grandmother laying there like that for days or weeks. My Dad said yes. My grandmother died that night.

My father would never tell me the name of that doctor.....but I will be forever grateful that he was there for my grandmother.

That is very sad. You do bring up a point that the elderly are prone to suffer severe complications from procedures that might not affect a young person much at all. Just to be clear, this does not mean it was the fault of a doctor- it's biology. The body just doesn't work the same way in advanced years.

At least it was discussed by the doctor. The terminally ill are susceptible to termination by doctors as well but, sometimes, on the doctors' terms. Doctors that terminate base their decision on the cost vs. benefits of keeping terminally ill patients alive.

Where do you get this from? The decision is always in the hands of the POA; if anything, doctors are known to extend false hope to families to pad their wallets with expensive treatments.
