Yeah I just read about that this morning on vindy.com.

I'm currently in South Korea teaching English for a year, and when I first told people that I was coming here, they all were so worried that something horrible would happen to me. So I had to do some figuring and show them how much more dangerous it was to be in Youngstown, Ohio than it is in South Korea. In Youngstown there is 1 murder for roughly every 2,000 people, whereas in S Korea it is 1 for every 45,000 people!

Honestly, most of the murders are drug-related incidents, so if you keep your nose clean, you really have nothing to worry about. I grew up in Youngstown and went to YSU and never had one problem. I myself never knew of anybody being involved with all these homicides either, so it's all in the company you keep.

True, but I don't want my kids outside riding their bikes or tossing the football while my drug-dealing, next-door neighbor gets shot in his own home. Even if we have nothing to do with it, accidents can happen. Many parts of the city are no place to raise a family.

I get out to the area once a year and listen to your local talk radio. I was struck by how similar Youngstown seems to be to Reading Pa. and Allentown Pa. The same issues, same problems, similar size cities.
Reading has cleaned itself up slightly and with new investment in the city crime has gone down. A new police chief made a big difference as well as having a coordinated effort between city county and state law enforcement. Like you, criminals killing each other was 80% of the homicides but innocents and police did get caught in the lawlessness.
One question. Reading's criminals came from Philadelphia and mostly NYC. NYC exported crime and drug trafficking big time into Pa. all the way to Lancaster and even York. Where did Youngstown criminals come from or were they always there?

Icy,

That's a pretty good question. I think most of the criminals are from here. I suppose one could only speculate as to why they are criminals. IMO, I think there are a few good reasons, drugs, lack of parenting, and perhaps a lack of jobs. I think it all comes down to personal responsibility or lack there of. Also, i do remember as a kid hearing about gangs coming down here from detroit.......but i'm not sure if those people are still here.
