OKC needs a light rail system so bad....It is ridiculous that the city has gone so far w/out it. It is going to catch up to OKC fast! The City is so large...I dont know where they need to begin..LOL. OKC has everything going for it but a rail service (Too much sprawl). The maps 3 will do it...But with a NBA team coming in?? Like what is this city thinking...Those bus trolley things are a joke. ...........

It would be nice, but do we really need it? We have one of the lowest congestion rates for a city our size and lower than many cities half our size, not to mention all the highways we have. I think it'd be cool, but let's not kid ourselves here, most Oklahoma's including myself are attached to their cars at the hip. However, maybe light rail will stop the city from spreading all the way to Kansas...

I wish OKC could get some type of public transportation that works. It is a complicated thing though, because everything is spread out so much.

Default Rail

The story behind OKC rail...

Oklahoma City is experiencing a new renaissance in rail service. What began with only freight service in the early 1990s was transformed by the arrival of the Heartland Flyer. With its daily service to Fort Worth, the Heartland Flyer provides access to the nation's rail network and has given Oklahoma City yet another option for inter-state transportation.

The section of I-40 directly adjacent to downtown is known as the "Crosstown Expressway". The I-40 Crosstown Construction Project will relocate the stretch of highway several blocks to the south. It is expected to be completed in 2012.

There were plans in the early 1990s to build a light rail system for the city as part of the MAPS urban redevelopment program, but the project stalled repeatedly on issues of funding. (Ernest Istook, 5th District Congressman and chairman of the congressional transportation committee, played a major role in killing federal funding for the project). However he played vital roles in getting other major cities funded for light rail like Los Angeles.

New Development: A downtown trolley system could be implemented under a future new MAPS III initiative. METRO Transit released a new Mass Transit plan in January 2006 that details its vision of rapid transit in the coming years. The study results showed light-rail trolley in downtown OKC, commuter rail from downtown to the suburbs of Edmond and Norman, and a comprehensive, specialized metropolitan bus network that has been long overdue.

Amtrak serves Oklahoma City via the Heartland Flyer, based out of the Art Deco Santa Fe train station in downtown. It has daily service to the suburb of Norman and terminates at Fort Worth, Texas where passengers can transfer to the nation's rail network. There is currently a major push to expand the Heartland Flyer north into Kansas since the service has been guaranteed by the recent state contributions.

There is also a heritage rail line under re-construction that will connect Adventure District in NE Oklahoma City to downtown. The line likely would run from the Santa Fe train station through Bricktown and the Oklahoma Health Center through the Eastside to Adventure District attractions such as the Oklahoma City Zoological Park, Remington Park, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

.................................................. .................................................. ...........

OKC will eventually get rail. Sprawl is happening across the country in many cities. That doesnt mean that OKC wont be getting rail in its inner districts or transit to Edmond and Norman. The studies are complicated. But rail will have to happen...OKC is becoming very urbanized. Too many current and future projects that are and will cause a high density for Downtown as it becomes more and more of a destination. Its just a matter of time...I just think that it should have happened earlier........

Maps 3 will provide light rail but the question is when...I think we are looking at around 10 years. Maybe 5 for trolley....We gotta have light trolley rail...Too much entertainment going on downtown..People are getting angry over not having it which in turn causes action.

All these happenings in OKC are wonderful. It's too bad that I'm 17 and more than likely will not be here in 10 years, let alone 5. Sadly I won't be able to experience many of these things until I visit someday. At least I've gotten to experience the renaissance of bricktown and NBA basketball in the last few years.

Cool pics, Happytown

Here's a lot of info about trolleys:

Doug Dawgz Blog: Okc Trolleys Part 1

I want to see part 2. I know there were some shenanigans that went on to end the trolleys.
