Next up for developers: Reviving Crossroads Mall - Omaha.com

quote:

Crossroads Mall is next on the agenda.

Rod Yates and Frank Krejci, the developers of Nebraska Crossing Outlets,

said now that the Gretna mall is up and running, the pair will turn their attention to Crossroads Mall.

Yates said the architectural, construction and engineering teams he assembled to make Nebraska Crossing a reality are ready to focus on 72nd and Dodge Streets.

Yates, head of OTB Destination, said he and Krejci, the owner of Crossroads, plan to start work on permits and “get the feasibility studies started.”

Several outlet retailers that opened new-to-Nebraska stores Friday are interested in opening full-line stores in Omaha, said Yates, although he would not specify which stores might follow him to Crossroads

“We're ready to take advantage of the busiest intersection in Omaha,” O'Brien said.

Like Nebraska Crossing Outlets, Crossroads would largely be demolished and replaced by new construction, including retail space, office space and a hotel.

Only the Target store and the parking garage would remain to be integrated into the design of the planned open-air mall.

Sears and Barnes & Noble would be temporarily relocated.

When completed, the new $350 million shopping center — including a $15 million “smart” network — would offer 400,000 square feet of retail space, compared with the current mall's largely vacant 700,000 square feet.

I think Target is the only one to stay in its current spot. At one time, Sears also owned their building like Target does, but now Target is the only one that owns their land/building.

We were in Sears Friday night and were discussing the new Crossroads with a sales associate. Sears still owns their building and the land it sits on. They're not going anywhere, at least according to him. Take if forw what it's worth.

The Sears land/building are now owned by the mall. They bought out Sears a few years ago.

This has been talked about from time to time for a few years already. Hopefully this time something will actually happen. It's such a pity that a mall in such a central location in a thriving area has been so dead for several years. From midtown, it is such a convenient location, especially being near UNO, Aksarben Village, and Furniture Mart.
