Quote:
If you've watched a Denver Broncos game on TV this year (with the sound on) you know that Peyton Manning likes to yell Omaha! a lot before taking the snap from center.

That call-out hasn't been missed by the fine folks in Omaha, Nebraska.

The city's official tourism twitter feed sent out the following tweet during Denver's victory over the Chargers on Sunday:

Manning has been using "Omaha" has a call out for half the season. Payton was in Omaha last year for a meeting with Warren Buffet and ever since then has been using "Omaha" in the game. The rumor is that Warren contributed a pile of money to one of Peyton charities.

It's a reference to the Omaha Beach D-day blitzing in Normandy, i.e. he's calling out possible blitzing defenders for the RB to block. It has nothing to do with Nebraska.

I see you've been conversing with Peyton Manning a lot lately.

The Omaha cadence is actually used all through the NFL. Manning has been using it since his Indy days.

That's not correct. In the Broncos Erhardt-Perkins offense, it is a snap count alert. In other offenses, it is an alert to cancel shifting and motion and line up in the finished formation.

I've heard his brother do it for years. Tony Romo uses it often, and I've heard Flacco use it before. It's definitely not a new thing and it's a wonder why it is all the sudden getting a lot of attention.

... to protect against blitzes (as in the Omaha Beach D-Day blitz).
