Thanks for the info, Sunny. Preparing for our relo trip, which will be short and fast-paced, so that kind of info is very useful.

You're very welcome. In my opinion only, Seal Beach and Sunset Beach are affordable (by SoCal standards) beach towns, great for those that work from home, aren't working, are retired, or have the good fortune to work in nearby Huntington Beach, etc.

Sunset Beach has a small town feel (by OC standards) where all the neighbors seem to know each other (you'll notice this at the coffee shop and diner), and it's a great place to live if you want to be able to walk out your door with a surfboard in hand, but commuting from there to the more common OC employment areas would be a nightmare, IMO. Not that it can't be done, but with OC traffic, especially in a beach town during the summer, I wouldn't want to do it.

It just depends on what your day-to-day needs are right now as to whether it's a logical possibility for current your lifestyle. If I could telecommute every day, I'd live there. But alas, I can't.

Sunset Beach is now part of Huntington Beach (much to the chagrin of Sunset Beach Locals).

Oh, is it really now? Interesting. I've missed a few things since I've been gone.

Ironic you say that because when I lived in HB, I always considered SB to just be an extension of HB, but the SB locals strongly disagreed.

The entire norther west part of HB (Harbour Area, Bolsa Chica, Sunset Beach) and into Seal Beach (Village)is just a great place to live. Easy freeway access, close to the beaches, close enough to bike to Downtown HB on a protected trail. Good restuarants and other amenities.

Sounds like Tin Can Beach has come of age!

I don't think anyone has called it "Tin Can Beach" since the 1960s.

On a side note, I recently saw the cult film "Surf Nazis Must Die" - kind of strange to see how much the area has changed since the mid 1980s

^ Good post.

Based on this source, "The nickname for a 3½-mile stretch of sand just north of Huntington Beach, Tin Can Beach reached the heights of trashiness in the 1940s and '50s when it was the sometime domain of hobos, drinkers, free spirits and vacationers."

When I lived in HB several years ago it was nice, and it's nice now, so that's all that matters.

pacific2, my DH, two sons and I are contemplating a move to Southern California from the Bay Area, where I have lived for the past 20 years. I am very much a Bay Area person, and am worried about moving south to a community that is very suburban. We have lived in a loft in downtown Oakland and now in Alameda. If DH does convince me to move for this job offer, it has to be to a place that at least is as nonconformist as SoCal goes.

I love the idea of a dog park; we have a greyhound mix and take him to our local parks several times a week. Are there any doggie daycares around?

I am a labor and delivery RN and would also probably try to get a job in a hospital at some point. Are there local hospitals? I really know nothing of the area.

How are the schools? My sons are currently in 1st and 3rd grade.
Thank you for any and all advice!

Aliso Viejo (and most of South County) is conformist and very image conscious.
In reality most of OC is very conformist. South county just steps it up a notch.

If you want character: San Clemente, Laguna Beach, Old Town Orange, Downtown Fullerton, Downtown Huntington Beach, the older Sections of Newport Beach, Seal Beach Village.

All have good schools. Most Have dog parks. Huntington even has a dog beach.
