I am thinking about moving to Long Beach from Virginia and working in Fullerton....is that drive on I-710 and 91 possible to do everyday?

I plan on living within 10 miles of Cal. State Long Beach, are most areas around there safe? Any bad areas i should not live near?

Is traffic in Long Beach and around Orange County as bad as people make it out to be?

I used to live 12 miles from my office and there were days it would take 90 minutes.

I now live 40 miles from work and it takes me 45 (even in a NH Nor'easter).

Is traffic as bad as people make it out to be? Yes, and worse.

The basic rule of thumb in Southern California is live as close to your work as possible. If you do that, traffic won't be such an issue.

Thumbs down Traffic

I was staying with my partner in Paramount, the city that borders Long Beach to the NE, and I worked in a little nook of Anaheim that was surrounded by the city of Fullerton. I had to give myself at least an hour every day, sometimes I was lucky to make it in 40 minutes, but the 91 is a killer! I now live less than 5 miles from my work and the drive is 15 minutes tops. Word to the wise, live as close as possible to work, commuting is for people in the IE.

Absolutely.

Why do you want to live in Long beach?

I finally wised up and moved one mile away from my office. Suddenly I had five times more time to spend with my family/at home. Fullerton has some pretty nice areas. Long Beach is not awful, but I cannot understand why someone would choose to live there and commute to Fullerton.

The problem is that there is no normal commute time because you never know what to expect.

Example: I needed to drive approx. 60 miles the other day.
Map quest estimate was 1 hour 10 minutes.
It was a weekday, but I left at 1:30 pm to try and avoid rush hour.
Didn't see a single stalled vehicle or accident the whole way and no mention of any special problems anywhere along my route on any traffic report that I heard (believe me I was listening)
Actual drive time: almost 3 hours

So Cal Traffic Gods can throw a wrench in the best laid plans on a whim. They're a moody bunch!

I'm not familiar with your particular route... but I've never heard the 91 described as an easy commute.

I want to live in Long Beach because my Wife will be attending California State Long Beach and want to live close to her school.

I will be an Outside Accout Manager in Orange County area with office in Fullerton which i will not have to report to the office everyday.

That makes sense.

Downtown Long Beach is pretty neat if you like living in a city. There are gang/crime issues. You need to be careful where you choose to live. ask a lot of residents in any area that you are considering. If you rely on only one or two, you may get a jaded or rose colored viewpoint. You can usually get crime statistics or a particular area from the police department, but you will have to work at it to get them to cough it up. Sometimes, the areas are too large to give you meaningful information about safety. The area may include a bad neighborhood while the neighborhood your are considering is just fine.

I have some friends in Long Beach they live on Signal hill. They love it there, but there is a crime issue.

Although I commute 20 miles into OC for work, I choose to live in Long Beach because I like charming, waterfront neighborhoods that provide the opportunity for walking to local shops and eateries. I also like Long Beach because it has the convenience of many OC suburbs but the entertainment options of LA. It is a big city and it does have some rough parts, but East Long Beach and Coastal downtown are very nice and safe and offer a lot.
