Wow...I thought coyotes usually ran away from you when you got near them?

Not always. I lived all around the Coachella Valley desert for 25 years growing up. Sometimes walking to the bus while the sun was coming up, would see coyotes quite frequently. Most wont bother you if you keep your distance but some are aggressive. Ive had to fight off a few coyotes in my day and my German shepherd, who used to walk with me to the bus sometimes, killed several that got too close.

The coyotes are looking for small prey. They no doubt saw the adults but thought they could grab the small prey and run off.

I respect coyotes. Very smart cunning animals. Survivors at their best. I have a friend who lives near Seal Beach Naval Station and they have a horrendous coyote problem. They will climb fences and go in yards and grab pets.
Last I talked to him the city was looking into bringing in someone to see what can be done to get rid of some coyotes. I've seen them in Garden Grove in the drainage ditches. Coyotes are all over OC. I was working in Dana Point and I looked on the hill next to the house and saw three deer going up the side.
Most people think coyotes are just dogs that got loose. Lots of places for them to hide and plenty of food for them to get from trash to pets.

Sometimes they are an issue in TR. They live on the other side of Jamboree on the undeveloped side and come over and cause a bit of chaos.

I told me friend don't walk at night on Jamboree after dark as a single female. Walk in pairs at that time.

I saw one walking right down the street last year about 100 yds from 2 teenage girls.

Costa Mesa had a real problem with them several years ago. Our neighbors had their dog killed, jumped fence and mauled to death.

You are generally safe in pairs though as adults or taller, larger individuals.

They travel for miles using the flood control channels. It's their freeway system.

yeah, I've seen them in Buena Park as well...especially around dawn if up I'm early for a run. No problems yet, but being that there are plenty of possums around the area and other small creatures (like cats)...they probably have no need to go after people.

Pretty scary about the three year old though. Reminded me of another incident in Cypress 2 years back: 2-year-old recovering from coyote attack at Cypress cemetery - The Orange County Register

"What brings in the coyotes is food," Officer Jennifer Marlatt said. "Pet food left outside, unsecured trash and fruit that drops from trees bring the coyotes in from the parks, wetlands, golf courses and flood control channels. They will go for what's easily accessible instead of hunting for their food."

I had a coyote confront me & my Doberman in a canyon in a park in Vista (San Diego Co.) some years back...it was a staredown, the coyote was quite large. This was in the middle of the day. I yelled at it & it turned around & trotted away, very bold. Many people there had their pet cats & small dogs snatched out of fenced yards by coyotes, & they walked the streets at night in my neighborhood.
