Just looked at the gas buddy app....lowest I saw was $3.95 at ARCO. Seems really high considering that WTI oil price is floating around $50/barrel which is like lowest it has been in years. I remember when oil was around 125-130/barrel and gas prices were around $4.50/gallon.

Whats up with that?

Simple.

PROFITEERING.

Oil companies taking advantage of the unique California market and extorting customers.

I remember reading about this a few weeks ago. Part of it, so they say, is due to that recent explosion that took place at the Exxon plant in Torrance.

If that were true, gasoline prices in Las Vegas would be similarly affected. However, that is not the case.

We are trapped because no refinery outside of California makes our special blend. You want clean air? Then, bend over.

Wow pretty crazy. It seems all of you are right.

I think when I replace my car I'm going to buy a natural gas car. At least natural gas is still cheap and it doesn't have all the problem associated with gasoline.

The special blend went into effect long before this recent spike in prices. Southern Nevada (and most of NV) gets their gasoline from the same California refineries and their prices did not spike like ours. They are typically about 25-35 cents a gallon cheaper than our prices, currently they are a dollar less.

And from what I understand, it's not so much cleaner air for coastal California…it's for the benefit of those towards the east. I don't mind paying more to have a cleaner environment, but I don't think anyone wants to be taken advantage by refineries while there's an oil glut out there. I hope our AG is able to discourage this behavior, it seems to happen every year no matter what the supply/demand for oil is.

When you only have 13 refineries and two companies control 53%, this is what you get. They always go offline for maintence during the busiest month and always in pairs. Price manipulation thru supply and demand.

I work from home so I rarely drive. I average about 5500 miles a year on my car. I don't understand why people who commute or drive a lot, especially in CA aren't buying at least hybrid cars if not electric. Quite a few nice ones out there now and you get nice price breaks and incentives for buying them.
