What could these groups have to gain from protecting the homeless like this?

Let me break it down for you. They want to find a duty based on a not yet existent “right” to housing. This right would force cities to provide housing. Finding such a right would collapse the system since the number of homeless-by-choice (millions are one paycheck away from not paying their bills) and persons who are making financial decisions that can easily lead to homelessness, are many in number. The entire system eventually collapses. There is never a thought on the part of bleeding hearts that people made stupid choices with their money, made reckless life choices, lose their jobs due to stupid choices etc.; blame is always assigned to others. People want to be able to act without consequence. And as for the responsible renters, how long before they figure out that it is easier to just have others pay for your housing?

There are communist agitators pushing "homeless rights" for strategic reasons.

"Gain"? Did you think that these people are doing this for a pay-off? Homeless advocacy groups are trying to defend the civil rights of people who are currently unable to stand up for themselves.

Yes a gain, a political one that ushers in communism all the faster.

Free housing and living in the park is not a civil right. What civil right allows them to live in tents wherever they want and throw garbage everywhere? That is what campgrounds are for.

Socialism/communism will destroy the US as it has destroyed other countries like Cuba and Venezuela.

As a camper and an RVer, I resent that remark:
"Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but tracks."

Sorry about that. I meant that campgrounds are for camping, not throwing garbage. That should never be done anywhere.

The lawsuit is a civil rights case at heart, alleging among other things that anti-camping laws constitute cruel and unusual punishment, violating the 8th Amendment rights of homeless people.

Plaintiffs argue that because there isn’t enough shelter or affordable housing in the county, homeless people are forced to sleep or store their belongings in public areas. Ticketing them, the lawsuit alleges, unfairly makes them criminals over something they can’t avoid.

The cities in response have argued that their laws don’t criminalize homelessness because they allow people to sleep in some public spaces and only prohibit erecting structures or blocking public sidewalks.

No, the lawsuit is judicial activism.
