Hello everyone,

I am looking into moving from Nebraska to the Orange County area to be closer to my wife's family. We are married, in our late 20's with one child (will probably add one or two more). I would most likely work in Newport Beach or Irvine. My wife's family lives in Long Beach, but they are thinking of moving to the city of Orange.

We would like to be close to Irvine/Newport Beach, in a safe, family-friendly location. I would like to rent something with two bedrooms for around 1500-1800 per month. I don't really care about being close to the beach, and I don't need the fancy nightlife or anything like that. Ideally, we would like someplace with some decent arts (theatre, music, dance). From what I have seen in this message board, I have the following impressions:

Irvine: Probably the best fit, but maybe too expensive
Orange: Near family, quaint, not bad
Costa Mesa: Seems recommended a lot on this board
Santa Ana: Stay away, far away
Tustin: Not bad, but getting worse, possibly turning into Santa Ana
Anaheim: Has good and bad parts
Newport Beach: More geared towards young, single people-not a good fit for us
Garden Grove: Stay away
Westminster: Stay away
Fountain Valley: Not bad

Any information to add or change on my list would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You could also consider Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel and Aliso Viejo.....are are within reasonable travelling distance from Irvine.

If you don't mind being around crowds, traffic jams, endless concrete, high cost of living and dry, dry, dry conditions, then, yes move here.

We are moving to another state a month from now because of the above mentioned issues.

Having said that, I have lived here for many years, and for the most part, it has been okay - just tired of it all.

Good luck on whatever you decide!

If you like traffic, 50 year old homes that cost $500,000 plus $500 a month in property tax, 50% of the people' native language is not English and long lines at Disneyland, move to Orange County. How much money are your in-laws going to give you? Oh, one more thing people in Orange County don't think much of Christianity. They worship money, sex and image. Just my opinion.

Sounds like they aren't brainwashed and they have jobs and they are physiologically healthy.

Christianity is a choice. Sex is great if your married. Image is an illusion ask the Broadcom owners or maybe the ex-police chief or the numerous ex-subprime lenders from this area or...hahahahaha

If you are settling in to raise a family, the stereotypical pick would be south orange county. Think Irvine south down the I-5 freeway. Lots of different possibilities. Another option nearer Orange would be Yorba Linda or Anaheim Hills.

Coast Mesa is more young & single. It sits between Santa Ana & Newport and is a mix of both. If you are looking for a quieter family place, I would not reccomend it.

Oh - and yes you are crazy. OC is not an easy place to raise a family - economically, socailly or spiritually. If I could convince Mrs. OCI, I'd be out of here in a heartbeat.
