My grown kids live in various parts of OC/Long Beach. I'm moving from Ventura County. I want to make new friends, have things to do, will also be job hunting. I've rented a nice good size house in safe residential area for many years here in Ventura County. Haven't lived in an apartment since I can remember. Honestly don't know which area to start looking at down there. Helpful suggestions would be great!

Much will depend on where you secure a job.

What kind of job are you looking for?

Exactly.

Once you know where you'll be working you can make a better decision. There are several options for safe pleasant housing in OC. Let the work thing drive your final decision as quality of life is inverse to commute distance in OC.

Question Job first then home

I don't know how to job hunt prior to living in the area...can't take extensive time off current job for interviews. Commute time from my current area is 2-3 hrs each way, so any trip down for an interview wipes out an entire day. How do people manage that?

Apply. Wait for an invitation for an interview. Ask if you can do it over the phone. One problem is, employers may screen out out of town applicants.

Not Sure what kind of job you are looking for - professional, clerical, retail, etc. - but one thing may be to start networking thru your kids. If they are employed and established in OC, start working them & their networks to find out about opportunities in OC. Most jobs and an even higher percentage of good jobs get filled this way. Posting your resume to a company's online HR black hole has a pretty low success rate.

The job market is not very good right now -- at least in my field (RN), most hospitals have hiring freezes. I would make sure you can get a job down here first. The suggestion to network through your children is a great idea. Do you have any paid sick days? Although not an ideal way, you may have to call in sick to get to your job interview as it is an entire day ordeal. We are heading into a very long depression so being close to your children will be important -- families will have to ban together.
