Hi,

I grew up in Cerritos. There aren't any dangerous parts of Cerritos. There are older parts, but that doesn't mean dangerous. I specifically grew up around the Bloomfield, 166th area. The elementary school district of choice is Whitman. The junior high you want your kids to go to is Carmenita. Parts of Carmenita JHS district feeds into Gahr, the other feeds to Cerritos HS. I've been told that Gahr is now better than Cerritos HS. Though, back in the late 80's and early 90's, Cerritos was better. Of course, it doesn't matter at all if your kids go to Whitney High School, a public magnet school that has been listed as one of the best high schools in America by US News and World Report and has been the number one high school, according to California Department of Education rankings for as long as I can remember. Though there is a charter/magnet school in Cypress that is giving Whitney a run for it's money.

Furthermore, with the local business taxes collected from Cerritos Auto Square and Cerritos Mall, the city is flush with money. Look at their renovated library. When I was living there, they used to repave the streets ever 5 years or so. In that area of south LA county/north inland OC, I'd live in Cerriots without question.

Cerritos is good...I'd move there. Since you were open to looking into Los Alamitos, also look into Cypress. It directly neighbors Los Al but is considerably cheaper with just as good schools. You'll be able to find a townhome/condo within your price range.

Default Cerritos

All of Cerritos is generally safe low crime, it's just the "buffer areas" that one might see a specks of graffiti and that is mainly the border to Norwalk and some parts bordering Artesia...when little animals like to wonder in and mark their territory..they should be careful cause they will get neutered if caught doing it.

I lived in the townhouse west of bloomfield and north of 166th for 2 years. It was a nice neighborhood and quiet but don't live in the house that is right off 166th street because you will hear the cars passing by easily. This particular area is not part of ABC ditrict but the neighborhood south of 166th and east of Bloomfield is part of ABC school district.

Cerritos doesn't have many apartments, and that is by design. Most of the apartments you will see will be along South Street east of Bloomfield. Neighboring areas in Lakewood, Norwalk, La Palma, and Cypress have many apartments, while Cerritos is very involved in keeping property values as high as they can. One thing you will find in Cerritos is plenty of condos though, so you can probably find some condo rentals(albeit more expensive than apartments)

I really do not know much about North County. You can find a few condos in South County for under $300,000, but a lot depends upon how much space you need. For example, this 1200 square foot 2bd/2bth condominium is available in Rancho Santa Margarita for an asking price of $290,000:
128 VIA CONTENTO, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688 | MLS# S618672
