The city of Tigard celebrated it's 50th birthday as an incorporated city, ironically on September 11th. The city held an event at it's public library in which 102 year old Curtis Tigard spoke and told about how his grandfather, Wilson Tigard, first settled in the area in 1852. The current mayor, Craig Dirksen, then spoke for a few minutes and made a joke about how the motivation for incorporation 50 years ago was to deal with the traffic on 99W. He then said they're still working on it. If you live anywhere near this area, you know exactly what he meant.

The city served punch and cake and everyone was entertained by the Woody Hite big band. There were at least 200 people in attendance. The library gave out free copies of Tom Wolfe's book, "The Right Stuff" and also some children's books.

At least four former mayors were in attendance and many city volunteers, however a few current City Council members were not there. Maybe they had other pressing plans. Of course, a lot of the talk was about politics which is the norm when you have an event attended by politicians.

All in all, it was a very nice event and a lot of credit for the event should go to the head librarian, Margaret Barnes.
