Anyone know what Oregon did with the "gifts" received on the coastline from Japan's tsunami?

Wondering if the tsunami junk will be a plus or minus for tourism. Also, in a related note, did the rusting derelict at Fort Stevens ever get removed? That fascinated me when my mother visited friends down there in the 50's.

You can see it in the 2009 post apocalyptic movie The Road:

You mean the Peter Iredale? It's still there.

In the 1960's a guy claimed he owned the salvage rights and started working towards removing it. But that was fought against quite heavily and nothing ever came of it.

Wow. Can't believe it. 60 years has definitely reduced the size. But I still recognize the remains after all this time. You could say "aw that's just a piece of junk", but to some of us it has ancient associations. I'd actually like to go there on a visit just to see if it takes me back the 60 or so years since I stood on the coastline there. Too bad I had yet to buy my first camera.

One of the few places you can still drive on the beach.

I believe that you can only drive up to the Fort Stevens boundry.

I can't remember if the Peter Iredale is past that.

The Peter Iredale has been there since 1906. Driving on the Beach is seasonal.16 Things To Do in Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon
