I am getting ready to pack my belongings up and head west. I currently live in Ohio and as someone who loves being outdoors... well, I need to move.

I'd love to hear people's opinions on the difference between Eugene and Bend as far as quantity/quality of trails for running/hiking goes.

Thanks!

I haven't lived in either town for many years but let me give you a general picture: Eugene is a runner's paradise, the city has an extensive network of paved trails that are used by runners and cyclists. Running Trails in Eugene If you live in Bend your best options are the National Forest. Review this link: Trail Running and Running Events in Bend Oregon

South of Bend is Sunriver. They too have an extensive trail network that is primarily used by cyclists but runners do use them. Dirt Trail Running in Sunriver | Sunriver Resort

It is harder to find employment in Bend & Sunriver than Eugene. That said jobs are not plentiful, period.

The weather in Bend and Eugene are quite different. You should look at their monthly average temperatures and rainfall and decide if you want to live in a high desert or a wet valley.

I lived in Ohio and Recently in Indiana. There is a lot of outdoors there if you get out of the city.

I suppose I should have been more specific. I am looking for mountain trail running. Things that most people would consider hiking trails I guess. I know Bend has a lot of options for this, I guess I am curious if Eugene has acessible difficult hiking trails. Thanks much.

Not in town, but about twenty miles or so away. Maybe more like fifty for what you are looking for.

Given this, I would vote Bend. But both are pretty good.

If you want premium trail running you want Ashland.

Some of the best trail runners in the country live there, including Hal Koerner and Timothy Olson.

I remember when I hiked the Grand Canyon from rim to rim it took me three days. The trail runners did it in hours ....... Rim to Rim.
