So if I understand this correctly, conservatives are the silent minority in Oregon?

Probably middle-of-the-roaders are the silent ones (a plurality, actually).

From a respected annual Gallup poll: State of the States

Although a plurality of Oregonians are Democrats:

% Republican/Lean 39.3
% Democrat/Lean 46.5
Democratic advantage 7.2

More Oregonians self-identify as conservative than liberal:

% Conservative 33.0
% Liberal 29.3
Conservative advantage 3.7

(% Other than liberal or conservative 37.7 )

That's because although most liberals are Democrats, not all Democrats are liberals. Some might consider themselves fiscally conservative. Many minorities vote Democratic but are social conservatives, etc.

Oregon is more liberal than the country as a whole, however.

Better yet, both sides actually work together and will cross the party lines frequently. Oregon politics has very little vitriol compared the National scene. Oregon as a state doesn't seem to care as much about the letter behind the name when we send them to Washington either.

Nonsense. Before the big publicity stunt it didn't even make the top 10. After his 10 minutes of fame, everyone will forget about it again.

Yep, and any time you ask they will be glad to bend your ear for a couple hours about how there is a vast conspiracy to block their drive to bring about the Kingdom of Heaven and Utopia.

Actually, the Oregonian is the largest newspaper in the state, and is quite fiscally conservative in its editorial policies. For example, they staged and unrelenting editorial drive to cut state pensions once again. Socially, they draw the line at demonizing alternative lifestyles and minorities, which upsets the social conservatives.

Sadly, it actually is insanely popular. It's behind only Sons of Anarchy and some football games for cable TV (broadcast shows get a lot more).

Are you sure? I looked up the cable ratings for October 2013, before the publicity stunt, and it wasn't even listed.

The whole fuss started with the Duck "patriarch's" interview in GQ magazine.

He was being interviewed because Duck Dynasty is the highest rated non-sports program on cable TV.

If it were not so popular the interview would never have taken place.

It was not a publicity stunt, so get over it.

Look harder? The season premiere had nearly 12 million viewers and was the most popular non-fiction show in the history of cable television.

Just because it's total dreck doesn't mean it isn't also wildly popular. American Idol is garbage too, but almost 18 million people tuned in for the season premiere of that. Think about that for a second, the reality show about dumb rednecks that airs only on cable drew 2/3 as many viewers as American Idol - how's that for not popular?

They do write letters to the editor in small rural newspapers, which can be funny to read, as some of these rural types are quite out of touch with reality.

For example various roads will be managed by a city, county, or the state. They will complain about the city (local small town) not fixing this or that on a road, but the city has nothing to do with it. Same with anything else "government". They never get it right as to which government entity is responsible.
