I first came to Oregon in 1981, for college. I had picked out Linfield College in McMinnville, even though I'd never been even close to the west coast.

I arrived at the Portland airport and went out front to meet the college shuttle. As it turned out, I missed it somehow, and I didn't know what I was going to do. I was 18 and scared.

A woman asked me where I was headed. I told her my story and she offered me a ride--she said she was going that way. She was from Oregon and knew her way around. I was SO relieved. It was almost an hour's drive and when we were getting close I asked for the 2nd or 3rd time where she was headed. She said she was actually just headed to the airport hotel, but she was passing on a favor she got once.

She told me that some years ago, her car broke down somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in a desert. A stranger went way out of his way to help her. When she asked how she could repay him, he said just to pass on the favor to someone else.

I've passed on the favor, but I'll keep helping people out. That day changed the way I see the world.

That is delightful and I am glad your daughter is doing better. My neighbors are like that too - we have our differences but when someone is in need, everyone pitches in without a second thought. Bless all the medical folks for the giving of their skills to someone in need.
