I suspected this would happen, as I kept hearing of people turning their fields into camp grounds.

Hopefully this will prevent even more of those empty fields from being turned into camping areas, or neighbors turning their back yards into camping areas.

They will start taking reservations on May 23rd.

I know when the camp grounds started offering extra spots, they were all reserved almost as soon as they started taking the reservations.

I don't think that Oregon State will be as crowded as the camping areas will be, as far as the demand on shared facilities.
The camp grounds added lots of extra spots recently, probably all using the same shared services (such as bathrooms) as the spots that are permanent.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately we'll just miss the eclipse this summer. While I'd like to experience it, I don't like the idea of sharing Oregon with so many others.

I watched a lunar eclipse last year through an upstairs window. It was a cloudy evening and most people couldn't see it, but through my window, the clouds cleared just enough and those that lingered blew by quickly. Tree branches framed the Mother Nature's spectacular show. It was very cool.

Than you Darnselfly, BTW I had to look three times to correctly spell your name!

I found a site that is really good for plotting the angle to the sun, for a specific date and time.
It isn't eclipse specific, but it does have eclipse information.
Mostly I like that I can try different points, to see what barriers might interfere with the view.

This shows the angle, at 10:17, August 21, from Riverview park in Independence.
SunCalc - sunrise, sunset, shadow length, sun position, sun phase, sun height, sun calculator, sun eclipse, sun movement, map, sunlight phases, elevation, Photovoltaic system, Photovoltaic

I was going to view it from there, until I realized that the park would be very crowded.
I decided to scope out something that was not going to be crowed with so many other people that I could not hear the crickets.

Now I am thinking I will just view from work (20 seconds less of Totality). I can easily walk to work from my house, so I won't have to deal with any traffic.

This website is pretty cool. One can move the point to anywhere in the world, and set the time they want, and it shows the position of the sun.
To see more eclipse information click on the [more] next to where it says "here next solar eclipse".

After hearing that OSU was renting out their dorm rooms, I was curious if Western Oregon was doing the same thing.
Western Oregon is either on (or very close) to the center line, not just in the zone of totality, but almost dead center.

I did a search and found this:

The most accurate maps yet from NASA. They account for the Moon's terrain and the elevation on Earth.

You can even download a zip file with all of the state maps. I printed the Oregon map on photo paper and it's "suitable for framing."

I can't believe that with all the public BLM land in Oregon, people aren't taking advantage of this resource:

I realize that the "State Parks" and developed "pay" campsites are full-up, but that isn't what I'm talking about.

There are many empty square miles of BLM desert land that you can camp on for free if you have a map and are self sufficient.

Besides, it will only last for about 2.5 hours starting about 4pm in the afternoon.

You could drive out from Portland to Madras in the morning, see it all, have dinner and be home by 11 pm.
