Hi, we found a lovely house in Malalla, and if all goes well we will be moving from Portland. It's lovely. But how would it be for a single person? It will be a couple and a single woman buying the house. As I said, it's beautiful, but I have some concerns about moving to a place where everyone is married. I'm in my 50's, and want to do more than see what new movie is on HBO Saturday night. Even when I was in my early 20's, there wasn't a lot in common with people whose conversations centered around their children. Dogs, yes, children? I'm a happy Aunt, but it doesn't take up all my time. Generally, when everyone is coupled up, single men are always welcome, not so much single women. Is this an ill-advised move?

Well it depends on what you want to do with your time. Molalla is a town of about 8,000 people so it isn't big.

Buy a horse and start barrel racing. You will fit right in.

This nails it. It is a rural town famous for it's fourth of July Rodeo. Not much going on there. I stayed ay a friend's farm for several months between moves and the most exciting thing we did was Long Island Ice Teas and Chinese for dinner in a seedy but fun little basement bar @ Happy Family Chinese.

Not much going on there. You do have Safeway, BiMart...but not much in the way of shopping. Lots of churches.

I find Silverton which is nearby a lot more interesting / prettier if you want to live out that way.

The only thing I don't like about Silverton is the way the traffic from 213 (214? "Cascade Highway"?) routes through downtown. The 4 way stop intersection on Main can get pretty busy and with some aggressive drivers (people headed through town from I5 or Hwy 22). Just a block in any direction and everyone calms down and everything is fine. But every time I stay there (2-3 times a year to visit friends) I have to remind myself that it is a lovely walkable little town EXCEPT for that intersection.

Sounds like a good location for a roundabout?

Probably not, it is in the historic district and would mean the buildings on all 4 corners would have to go. It isn't really a huge deal, but it is just such an unpleasant surprise in the cute small downtown area.

Default Thank you everyone

Thank you everyone who responded!
According to the distance calculator page, it's only 14 miles between Malalla & Silverton. Not bad!
Looks like I might be spending a lot of time on the road.
Being a rodeo town, I'm guessing that there may not be many vegetarian restaurants. Luckily, there's plenty of land for a garden.

I'm gonna be "that guy."

It's actually Molalla. One time somebody told me that when you are asked how to pronounce it, you start with "Mo" and then sing the rest.
