I hear great things about Portland: active lifestyle, good independent eats, ecofriendly, educated, etc. However, I am not interested in a place as big as Portland.

I will be camping up through Oregon and maybe W. Washington this summer and wanted to know what places to check. I don't care if there is a Walmart. Hell, I prefer if there wasn't.

Eugene is identical to Portland but much smaller (without being incredibly small.) Eugene has a decent level of sophistication for its size.

You can pretty much confine your search to places that have colleges and universities. Ashland comes first to mind. Corvallis also. Perhaps Bend if you go to the other side of the mts. Eugene if you want a smaller metro area with a combination of bigger city amenities and bigger city problems.

Eugene is a small Portland. Try it.
