Jacksonville has been fairly overpriced and overhyped for quite some time--at least back to the early-mid part of the decade when I lived in Southern Oregon...Don't get me wrong it's a nice town in beautiful location---but it doesn't have a whole lot to really offer besides some nice old architecture and a couple good restaurants. The Britt Festival is okay, but I'd think just like in Ashland, living in Jacksonville and dealing with the summer influx of tourists could be kind of annoying. The nearby Applegate Valley and surrounding mountains are awesome, but you can live almost anywhere in the Rogue Valley and enjoy the same landscape.

Just as an aside---a few years ago in one of Budget Travel's "Best Places You've Never" heard of articles they listed the town of Estacada, Oregon. Scouting Report 2007 - Budget Travel

Now Estacada's a kind of funky little town, with some great rafting on the Clackamas river nearby...but uh, anyone who's been there kind of knows what I'm talking about in regards to the place. Though I still don't think the tourist masses have discovered Estacada yet.

Sure, you can enjoy the landscape all you want from your car window, but some places in the Valley give you far greater access to getting your feet on the ground than others. Jacksonville (and Ashland, Talent, Applegate) have great proximity to public lands. East Valley is really socked in with private land parcels, meaning that you have to commute to hike :-(.

A very good point. Ashland and J'ville are loaded with public parks. Medford is loaded with golf courses. Not exactly the same thing.
