What has his age got to do with having a gun or not?

This was an 80 yo with dementia and guns. He should not have had access to guns because of the dementia but chances are he has them for many years.

There is a chance that this was suicide by cop as well.

There is no age restriction on owning guns. I don't think it made a difference that it was a really nice park. He lived there once and that was the problem. He thought that was not such a nice park.

It is just a very sad sign of the times that these things just keep on happening and are being done by anyone at any place at any time. I just pray that in the coming year things will settle down and we will be seeing less violence but I am afraid that will not be happening.

It also addresses that if it is known that if someone with a mental illness has a weapon, they should be watched by those responsible for them no matter what age they may be. I wonder if this man had a family who knew of his illness and knew he had a gun or if he was alone. As Nell says, he probably had a gun or guns for a long time and could have very well have been mentally sound when he first purchased them.

Has anyone tried to get the car keys from an elderly man with dementia? I have. Thank God my Dad didn't have any guns (he had given his rifle to my brother once deer hunting wasn't an option).

My dad didn't have dementia but he was declining very rapidly both mentally and physically in his mid eighties and did not want to give up his car keys. He had been driving since he was 14. No one could persuade him to stop until his doctor had a serious talk with him.

My dad didn't own a gun but I suspect if he did, he wouldn't have wanted to give that up either. It isn't easy to start giving away the things that were once your life and you don't want people taking them away either. I suspect the man in this case would have put up a struggle with any one who tried to take away his weapon.

It would have had to have been the police pounding on his door demanding he give up his gun to get him to give it up before something like this happened in order to prevent it happening. That would have probably ended up in a shoot out. There is just no easy way,
