I'm sure there are limits to the operation size, I doubt they'd let you go in with heavy equipment. I've seen the vacuum dredges used but I think that takes a lot more work than it returns. It's probably good for a hobby, but I'll bet even a minimum wage job pays more in the long term.

At the price of gold these days, and if you've got a decent river section, you can break even in a single season.

There are a lot worse hobbies.

No hobbies allowed anymore. It is Small Scale Mining now. The government said they protect mining rights, but if it is a hobby, we should get another hobby.

I've gotten some panning out the moss that grows on creek bed rocks.
That sounds so exciting. I'm a total newbie, No clue really what Im doing but jumping in with both feet.

Absolutely not. We are in fire season, and they have already been fighting small wildfires. Camping is only allowed in an improved campground.

There is a legendary gold miner and his old lady that live in an old school bus on a grandfathered in claim 'over the back' in the Siskiyou Rogue natl. forest. She walks with a limp and it is said that he shot her on the foot to keep her there. He only comes out once a year on his snow mobile to sell his gold. Someone gave me a map with an X on it, thats where he lives. But they said don't go there, she doesn't like other women.
