Could someone help me with the pros and cons of living in either place?
I have just got an opportunity to move to Orlando and am doing some research on this. ( I am a single male professional in his mid 20's) Thanks!

While some may say Orlando is unsafe, from what I can tell, memphis gets a much more dubious distinction:

Memphis:

3rd most miserable city: America's top 10 miserable cities - MSN Real Estate.

2nd most dangerous city: In Pictures: America's Most Dangerous Cities - No. 2 Memphis, Tenn. - Forbes.com

If you use Forbes as a benchmark, Orlando is not too far behind.

In Pictures: America's Most Dangerous Cities - No. 6 Orlando, Fla. - Forbes.com

So 1218 crimes per 100K in Memphis vs. 845 crimes per 100 K in Orlando. Orlando wins by a longshot

Orlando is much nicer overall. Orlando also has a lot nicer areas in the city limits and spread throughout the metro area. With a few exceptions like Midtown, most of Memphis is high crime and rundown with most of the nicer areas out east of the city in Germantown, Bartlett, etc. Orlando has a lot of the advantages of getting the biggest nicest stores, attractions, eateries, etc. and has much better access to beautiful beaches, etc. I think Memphis would be better for you if you are really attracted to some of the big draws like BBQ and blues/Jazz and like kind of a slow paced gritty area. It has its own quirks and draws but overall the Orlando area is much nicer. You may want to watch some movies based on the area like Blind Side or some John Grisham novel films like The Firm that kind of showcase the area. The Memphis area has also been featured a lot in reality TV when they do pieces on Southern Belles etc. It is very brown overall where Orlando is very green. You can use Google Street map to look at the areas and kind of get that same impression as well. I like Memphis but it is what it is.

If you call having the 6th highest crime rate in the nation winning, then go collect your trophy. Both cities obviously have an issue with crime. Just giving the OP both sides to the story.

Orlando is most definitely NOT the 6th most dangerous in the country. that's just being ridiculous.

Camden, Detroit, Chicago, LA, Baltimore, parts of philly, miami etc. are WAY worse.

according to this, Orlando is 17th, and this, it's 25th. Memphis is MUCH higher on both of those lists.

Thanks all. Last weekend was my first trip to Orlando and I just loved the area. There seemed so many more fun things to do there. As far as crime goes, my house was broken into the first year I was in Memphis and it was also the first burglary ever in my life.

I am excited about the opportunity to move and would love to hear any negative things about Orlando.

How much more do you have to earn to maintain the same level of living standard in Orlando? 20% ?
Is allergy an issue in Orlando?

The negatives

Heat and Humidity-it is unbearably hot here from now until mid September. Humidity is also a killer this time of year.

Hurricanes-even though we are inland they can still hit with alot of furry here.

Bugs-bigger than you can imagine.

Traffic- just read some of the other posts.

Among the cons of living in Orlando I think these are the biggest ones. As far as pros, I've listed many in my time here. Just go through the threads.
