Forbes magazine ranked Central Florida as one of the worst places in the country to find a job. The Orlando-Kissimmee area ranked 17th and Brevard County ranked 10th.

The retirement of the shuttle program will start a snowball effect that will impact all industries in Brevard County. The unemployed, who understand the problem, are turning to Brevard Workforce for solutions before things get worse.

Leroy Martin showed WFTV his folder of potential employers while at Brevard Workforce, saying being jobless is stressful.

"Being unemployed is a bad feeling. You lose your self respect, your self-worth," Martin said.

He isn't alone. More than 33,000 people are unemployed along the Space Coast. That's a 12 percent jobless rate.

The numbers are so horrible, Brevard County is ranked the 10th-worst area nationwide to find a job this winter. Employment expert Peter Kaiser wasn't surprised.

"The issue is we're going to get more jobs, but we'll also be laying off more people at the Space Center," Kaiser said.

County officials say the low ranking is mostly likely due to the impending shutdown of the space shuttle program, where 8,000 people will be laid off. As a result, an additional 12,000 jobs at diners, hair salons and other small businesses will be eliminated.

"We've been preparing for the shuttle shutdown for four years now, but out of that will come a lot of advantages," Kaiser said.

The county wants to train the shuttle workers and diversify Brevard County's business sector with $46 million in state and federal grants.

"Other communities before, that have taken a very aggressive plan like this, have not only come back but come back stronger," Kaiser said.

So far, companies like Midair and Zachery have announced they're moving to Brevard County. Martin welcomes the 1,700 new jobs they're bringing because there are only 3,000 openings in the county right now.

Workforce anticipates Brevard to make a comeback, but that won't happen for 12 to 24 month and it will all depend on the state of national economy.

We kinda knew this.......

I hope we can find a plan to supplement the Space Coast's job loss. Hopefully the private sector space travel takes off. In the meantime, I'm sure some will not agree but I think they should consider casinos (whether by land based or expanding casino boats), expanding Port Canaveral, possibly becoming the spring break destination that Daytona used to be.

Yet Orlando-Kissimmee is set to lead FL in job growth and personal income in 2011?

Orlando set to grow, lead state in 2011 | Orlando Business Journal

Things may be rougher on the space coast, but Orlando/Kissimmee should do better IMO.

Space Coast will see a decline unless something BIG HAPPENS.

None of that takes away the fact that Orlando is in the last 10 in the country when it comes to the job market.

Your article means nothing. Those are small gains. The whole country is expected to grow in those departments in 2011.

It was ranked 17th. So its not in the last 10. Besides lists are lists. No one can predict the future.

Hmmmm I wonder if they want to list the cape.

all kidding aside. There are numerous positions with the various defense contractors if one has the technical expertise. II think the telecommunications industry has had a bit of a rebound since 2001.
While not everyone is yet rosie. not everyone is in the ditch either.
it will all come out in the wash and people will survive these issues. They are looking at opening the new theme park and who knows what all else. We are the best place to be in the country for business and all.

So then, tell me, WHERE are the jobs going to be? The rust belt? MI, OH and upstate NY have been losing manufacturing jobs forever. California has an UE rate equal to ours, and is home to cities with worse UE rates than Orlando (El Centro CA has a 30% UE rate).

Seriously, instead of whining about how bad FL, people should look at the whole picture. Like I've said before, outside of TX and rural areas in states like ND, WY and such, you are going to find it tough everywhere.

Places like Austin, NYC, and DC are where the jobs are and will continue to grow in the coming years.

The whole picture is pretty bleak. Until we stop outsourcing and moving manufacturing jobs overseas, there will be no sizable increase in the amount of jobs. Americans are the biggest consumer of goods in the world and until we learn how to control our spending habits, the rest of the world will thrive on the jobs we've moved to them. I'm afraid it's going to take another Great Depression or government collapse to shock people back to reality.
