We are a family of two dads and two biracial kids (only say that because we want schools that celebrate diversity, not just tolerate it) and are toying with the idea of moving to the Orlando area in the next year. We’d most likely look for jobs at UCF. Can anyone recommend some communities in the metro area that are gay friendly, have strong schools and a decent commute to UCF. Looking for homes that are 500-600. Thanks in advance. I

I’d look in the Blankener/Boone district (Delaney Park, SODO area), or at Winter Park/Audubon Park in the Winter Park High School district. Thornton Park, Lake Eola Heights, Mills50, Ivanhoe Village and College Park are also going to all be very welcoming but I don’t know about what schools they’re zoned for/ratings. But basically anywhere in downtown is going to be fine. Orlando is pretty liberal (and very gay friendly) for the most part so I don’t think you’d have a problem anywhere, but you’d probably enjoy the neighborhoods I mentioned.

For maybe more what is considered an ideal blend of family-friendliness in terms of a safer/suburban feel along with good schools (plus an appreciation for diversity), I would say Winter Park best meets your criteria. Your budget will allow for some nicer homes in well-established neighborhoods as well. https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sal...45_rect/13_zm/

32828 is a great area, great schools, safe, diverse, and well established communities (Avalon Park, Eastwood, Stoneybrook East, Waterford Lakes)

32825 south of Lake Underhill Rd, east of 408 (cypress springs, andover cay etc) also have great neighborhoods as well.

All are easy to commute right up Alafaya to UCF, and with your budget you can get a lot of house.

I’d say Baldwin Park and Winter Park

I would recommend Winter Park, or any of the "park" neighborhoods around downtown (Delaney Park, Baldwin Park, College Park, Thornton Park). These aren't necessarily burbs since they are kind of in the heart of the city, but they are the most liberal areas of the Orlando MSA.

Getting out to UCF you get into areas like Oviedo, Winter Springs, and Chulota which are much more conservative and probably not the feel you are looking for considering your desire for promoting diversity for your kids. Oviedo and Winter Springs are great suburbs, but I think you'll like being closer to the downtown area more.

Plus that's a decent budget for Orlando, so you will be able to afford a nice home even in some areas of Winter Park. If you can, I would look closer to the $600k mark instead of the $500k mark, since the difference in homes between these two price points will be noticeable.

Oh. That's disappointing. You'd think people with wealth would have more sense?

Is Baldwin Park liberal? I really don’t get that vibe there...

For Winter Park, just visit any of the bars and lounges there and you’ll definitely see how t can be classified as liberal.
