I'm trying to landscape the backyard. I know I need sod, but would like other suggestions as to what types of plants or shrubs do well in this area. Something that's easy to maintain. Everything I plant seems to die.
Also, if you could help me out here, that would be great! My picture is on page 2 all the way at the bottom left hand corner.Win A New Backyard - OrlandoSentinel.com
I really appreciate it!

I don't know much about plants but it looks like you have some nice space to work with!

Thanks! I do, I have between a 1/4-1/2 acre. That's the main reason we moved here.

Hey beckycat,
I can tell from the pic that you do't like to water and probably do not have an irrigation system. Also, it appears to be shady. Try Florida natives and focus on drought tolerant plants. I love plumbago. Although not a native, itis hardy and drought tolerant. Native wildflowers do well. You will have to water any plant until it is established, but after that, just let them go.
Here is a link with some ideas.

becky - I hope you win too! You are always so helpful around here.

Just in case you don't, let me make just a couple of suggestions for you.

When I was still a teenager in Orlando, my folks let me have free reign over the yard (and it was very similar to yours). Luckily, I had a grandmother up in DeLand that had a beautiful, established yard ripe for the picking of transplants!

I personally would get a mix of different ferns and hostas for the shady areas in front of your fence. Use cypress mulch for your beds. It looks great, it's local and it helps keep down the bugs - they hate it.

If I can think of anything else, I'll chime in.

Good luck!
