Here's an article of a young girl, 16, that is attempting to sail around the world solo.

Now I admire her drive and sense of adventure.

That being said, I don't understand peoples needs to do these sort of extreme things.

If I was a parent, I think things would have to get mighty chilly in you know where before I'd let my 16 yr old do something like this solo.

Maybe its just me.

This would even be dangerous for a seasoned sailor!! I wonder who paid for it....they are nuts.

Some people live vicariously through their children...sad! Mine wouldn't be doing it.

Seems to me a few more years of sailing experience would have been in order.

It is plain foolish for anyone to sail solo like this ... What in the world were her parents THINKING!

She's not the first teenager to do this.

Australian 16-year old Jessica Watson returned a few weeks ago from her round-the-world solo sailing adventure. Before she left, people were asking what in heaven's name her parents were thinking. But lo and behold, when she arrived home safely, she was hailed a hero. If there were any voices still exclaiming how stupid it was, you couldn't hear them for cheers and general celebratory hullaballoo. Sigh.

By the way, for those who haven't heard the news yet, Abby Sunderland has just been found, safe and sound. Among other Australian search parties, a Qantas Airbus with a large contingent of specialist 'spotters' found her. I was on the phone when the news came through, so I'm not sure if she's being picked up, or plans to continue her journey.

I think the parents are crazy to have allowed this without a second boat following her.

She has been found and is alive. They can't get to her until tomorrow.

I agree. I don't understand how her parents could allow her putting herself in harms way like this.

Thank God she radioed she was ok. But her mast broke & she will have to be rescued.
