I receive a weekly e-newsletter from the regional office of my church's denomination. One article in today's newsletter reminded us that, although some of us are spoiled with a bountiful water supply year-round, many people in the U.S. and around the world do not enjoy that luxury. Whether there seems to be an ample supply of water or not, we should always be good stewards of the water we have, and below I've paraphrased some of the tips from the newsletter.
Place a bucket in the shower to catch excess water and use it to water your houseplants or garden.
Instead of letting your tap run while waiting for water to cool for drinking, keep a pitcher of water in the fridge.
Since kitchen sink disposals require lots of water to run properly, start a compost pile in your backyard and compost your food scraps instead of flushing them down the drain.
Don't leave the water running when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. Only turn it on when you really need it.
If you have a well, check your pump periodically. If it kicks on and off while water is not being used, it has a leak somewhere that needs immediate repair to conserve water.
Don't flush the toilet more often than necessary. For example, don't use the toilet to dispose of a tissue.
If you feel you must use a sprinkler on your lawn or garden, use a timer to remind yourself to turn the sprinkler off at a set time. (A garden hose can dispense 600 gallons or more in just a few hours. )
If you wash your own car, park on the grass and be sure to use an automatic shut-off nozzle on your hose.
