Are you a volunteer? Did you know that by volunteering you can help yourself as well as others?
According to Greg O'Neill, director of the National Academy on an Aging Society, "About 30 studies link volunteer work to health and longevity."* People who volunteer their services to others are generally happier and less focused on their own life challenges. Consequently, they have improved health and tend to live longer than those who don't volunteer.
Every community has opportunities for volunteers, and needs are great. Give some thought to finding a niche where you can help others, and you may reap the benefit of a happier, healthier and longer life.

Great tip, PJ, volunteering can be very rewarding in so many ways to all involved... here's the AARP-sponsored volunteer site where you can look up opportunities in your area by zip code, though I'm sure there are many others.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to make a difference in your community, learn new skills (or teach them) and make friends, too.
I have volunteered twice, but in non-standard ways. One was as a subject in a medical research study at a local teaching hospital. I also have volunteered on a website where you can read and research historical California newspapers. They need volunteer editors to compare the optically scanned text to the actual images of the newspaper and make corrections where necessary.
I love doing it, and it's a history lesson at the same time. Reading articles from a century ago makes you realize how many of our so-called modern problems like crime, political corruption and juvenile delinquency were happening even back in the "good old days."
Good morning Pam,this is a great tip and advice. I see so many older people doing volunteer work, especially in hospitals and they are actually the ones that really have a heart talking to you when you need some comfort in a stressing moment. Myself I love volunteering too

When we moved to a new town for (first) hubby's job, I didn't know a soul. Started to volunteer at a local hospital, and was later hired, albeit part-time. But this is so true! I'm still glad I did it.
