A calamity for sure, but let's break this down.

1. Justin is driving toward home and turns across traffic, and into the path of an oncoming car, causing an accident. (mistake #1) He probably didn't see the other driver, but this is no excuse. He failed to use proper judgment and someone else has a damaged vehicle and possibly bodily injury.

2. The wife, while cooking dinner perhaps, hears the crash and rushes to the scene leaving the stove unattended. (mistake #2) In an emotionally charged moment she did the right thing to go and see what had happened. It is apparent to her that an emergency situation exists and now she will attend to that.

The story doesn't tell us if she ran back into the house to cal 911, which would have given her another chance to turn off the stove, or if everyone remained outside and used a cell phone to call for help. It doesn't matter.

Either way, it was a bad day for Justin and his wife. It's not always easy to think clearly in a crisis and, here, we are provided with a classic example.

My heart goes out to the unlucky couple, but the police got it right. The other driver was not at fault for the accident. It was Justin.

If I was a judge, I'd ignore the ticket and let the insurance companies sort it out. But I'm not a judge. Maybe the insurance company needs proof of liability in order to settle with the oncoming car. In that case the ticket would have to stand.

(I have no idea what possessed me to go in to such detail)
