settlement for pain & suffering (accident, Maine)

If the medical bills from a auto accident total $4,000.00 & i multiply it x,s 3 =$12,000.00 & divide it by 2 =$6,000.00. Is this the total amount i should get from a settlement for pain & suffering or do i minus $4,000.00 (med bills) & expect to get $2,000.00 for pain & suffering ? I was told to multiply the bills x,s 3 & if im a good negotiator i should get 1/2 of that.

I found out ins companys no longer use that formula & havent in yrs.
