Adak used to be a Navy base. If I remember right at one time, population wise, it was the 6th or 7th largest town in Alaska. There were about 6000 Navy personal and dependents. A few years back the Navy closed the base. The land was aquired by one of the Native corporations. Not too long ago there was no real economy there. Things were so bad it got to where they could only operate the power generators a few hours a day. As with all locations along the Aleutian Islands the weather can be very nasty.

The cab might pick up or drop off several people before you got to your destination. In the winter time when the river is froze over, taxies run up and down the river to the various villages.
