hmmmm I guess I could ask tomorrows

Today's Question(s):

Tomorrows Today's Question. Are you the writer who penned, in yesterday's news, "United will resume daily flights to Beijing, four days a week." Has there been a change in the calender that I missed?

What would claim as your 15 mins of fame ?
This is tough. I have lived a life that has put me in the public spotlight many times. I've been interview on radio and TV. My ministry at race tracks has been covered in newspapers. Most unusual I believe was being called, at the last minute, to fill in for a missing artist, to sing the National Anthem at the track. With an hours notice and a 40 min drive to the track, I made it on time, did my 80 sec song on live TV and went home.

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever bought or sold anything on Ebay ?
Have done both regularly

Bonus Question:

What common,famous or sarcastic phrase best describes your mood today ?
I've been to 14 County Fairs, a Windmill Greasin' and a Hog Calling contest but I've never seen anything like this.

Today's Question(s):

What would claim as your 15 mins of fame ? Ha ha. I can think of a few, but here's one. Anybody remember the "Gong Show" from the 1970's? We had a version of the show at one of our local drinking establishments. My sister and I did a singing-comedy act and won the prize! The prize was something like $32.11, but at the time, that was enough to buy a round of drinks for our gang of friends. I was in my early 20s at the time; haven't thought of that in years. Fun memory.

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever bought or sold anything on Ebay ? No. Would like to, but am too intimidated by the process.

Bonus Question:

What common,famous or sarcastic phrase best describes your mood today ? Hanging in there. (Hasn't been an easy week.)

Default Try maybe all of 50 minutes of fame

Most interesting. If one can be the proverbial day late and a dollar short, then is the inverse true? To be early is to be a dollar richer? Methinks so!

Like some of you, I logged-in, came to QOTD, and thought I was getting 'cheated.' I answered this question yesterday. Seems to me we, as in some of us, need to revisit that QOTD counselor's office. I am seeing distinct signs of OCD here.

My 15 minutes of fame.

Even at my age now (which I don't mean to imply is, uh, 'ancient'), I recall with intense pride, winning a coloring contest as a young child, and letting my very poor, at the time, parents use the money towards a stereo sound system. Lest you think it was all a sacrifice, I do recall getting some cool LPs from Dad, in the bargain -- the first two Beatles' albums! -- and perhaps a toy or two. For the time, it was a substantial prize. I seem to recall coloring a scene for a major department store. My photo, which also displayed my prize-winning coloring job, was in the Baton Rouge, LA, newspaper and the New Orleans Times Picayune.I basked in the light of stardom at my school, and among my peers. Newspapers were bought, and clips and that photo mailed to family elsewhere across the US.

Fast forward to the late 1960s, and I also achieved some sense of stardom when I played the part of Joanne Worley, delivering the line, "Was that another chicken joke?" at the JR HS production of Martin & Rowan's Laugh-In. I SO wanted to be Goldie Hawn, but I wasn't blonde, t-h-a-t cute, or over-the-top silly like she was on the weekly show. The production was a BIG hit, featured in the local papers, and running much longer than what our drama teacher had planned. I have since never wanted to hear another chicken joke.

So, that's 30 minutes. . .

Add to that, being able to write for my own local newspaper as a HS SR, I was afforded, on occasion, the opportunity of meeting some famous people who for whatever reasons were on the NC coast. I met this really cute fellow, few years older than what I was, on the beach one afternoon, and because he shared that he was actually building a sailboat at one of the local marinas, I thought, interesting story, and when I ran it by my editor, she agreed.

Turned out, he was the son of some very famous photographers, and was quite well-known in his own circles. He played a part in Broadway's Jesus Christ Superstar, had been a guitarist in the rock group Steam (their sole hit was Sha-Na-Na-Na-Hey-Hey-Hey-Goodbye), and had somehow found his way to my small coastal town, and was building himself a boat with the intentions of sailing to the Bahamas.

Remember, I am maybe all of 17 at the time, and he is most wordly and very cute. So, one question leads to another, and he's sharing these things with me, and when I ask, in the natural progression of questions, "Where did your interest in music come from? Who taught you to play the guitar?," and his response is "Dustin Hoffman," he makes me mad. I throw down my notebook, excuse the photographer who had accompanied me on the interview, and looked the fellow in the eye and said, "Yeah. I guess I look like some stupid po'dunk town newspaper reporter, and I'll write all of this BS up, print it in the local paper. . ." My hands are on my hips as I stand facing him, very confrontational, "And you'll have a good laugh at my expense." He pulls his wallet out, and starts giving me phone numbers to verify the info -- one of which is a couple of numbers for Dustin Hoffman. "Try him at this one first," he tells me. "This is his office. If no answer, this is his number at his home."

Well, that led to my telephone acquaintance with Dustin Hoffman, one of my favorites since his portrayal of the young fellow headed-off to college in The Graduate. Oh, but here's to you, Mrs. Robinson! The best to come of the whole story, however, was meeting Hoffman many, many years later when filming brought him to my small coastal town.

One of my HS SRs shared with me that Dustin Hoffman had been to Chucky Cheese's with his son on a few occasions, and told me how the actor would have them lock the doors of the place, turn off the sign, but include the patrons already in the kids' restaurant, to a 'private' party of sorts. I begged the kid to call me at home the next time Mr. Hoffman came in the restaurant and that happened, and he did. I can't tell you how much fun it was, to slip in through the back, walk over to the actor, and be able to say, "Remember so-and-so, and a young reporter calling to verify his info? Nice to meet you, Mr. Hoffman. I'm that reporter, all of these years later." He was most gracious.

How thankful I was that I had matured from the star-struck 17-year-old reporter on the other end of a phone, closing with, "Hey, I've seen all of your movies. You're, uh, good."
