Hello everyone! I've just got a job offer in the NCR and am trying to get my groundings in terms of moving from out west.

I did an internship in the region last year and was living in Hull, but now that the move is looking more permanent, I'm trying to make a more careful decision about where exactly I want to live.

It's important for me to live on the QC side. I am planning on eventually moving to Montreal and I feel that living in Gatineau will a) give me much more exposure to French and b) enable me to apply for QC resident status, which will make the move to MTL easier in the long run.

I also want to be fairly close to Ottawa, because most of my social circle is living downtown there. When I was interning, I lived in a basement suite in Hull near UQO and I loved how close it was to Ottawa, but hated the lack of accessible amenities (particularly grocery shopping). I won't be driving at all, so I'm going to be relying on STO/OC Transpo to get me around.

Any insights or referrals to other resources or threads would be greatly appreciated!

If you are looking to stay in the Hull sector the most walkable area for all of your needs is in the vicinity of Les Galeries de Hull (corner Montclair and St-Joseph). It would have everything you need within walking distance plus pretty good bus service along St-Joseph or via the Rapibus to the twin downtowns.

Aside from that another good location for walkability (even though it does appear to be the case at first glance) but slightly further out is along the Rapibus corridor east of the Gatineau River. Stations like La Gappe, Les Promenades and La Cité have quite a few apartments nearby and lots of amenities within walking distance too.

Thanks very much for your quick response! I'm checking out places near Galeries de Hull and it's looking like a good fit for my needs! If only there was a grocery store in downtown Hull though haha

There will be one after several years without one. It's just been announced for the ground floor of the new Cartier-Wellington condo building just one block up from Promenade du Portage.
