Coldest days of the winter tend to be bone chilling; -30 C is cold, but you really do have to factor in the wind chill, which can drop the temps down to the low -40's C. While -40 isn't a steady cold temp (yes, -30 would be more like a regular cold spell) we can get several days with wicked, wicked wind chills. And (I've found) that the snow falls erratically from year to year. Sometimes it's a steady light snowfall throughout the season; other times, we can get some major 'dumps'; storms that can leave one digging out for a couple of days. Compared to Toronto (where my son lives) Ottawa gets a LOT more snow, more blizzards, and a LOT more frigid days throughout the winter, in general.
It's relative... in the Maritimes, there are several blizzards each winter with around 30-60 cm of snow each. Every winter, about once a week during January and February. Compared to that, Ottawa doesn't get that much snow.

The cold with the wind chill is bone-chilling. High winds aren't too much of a problem here, though, compared to some other areas (off the Great Lakes, the east coast).

Winters in Ottawa are similar to those in the Montreal area, damp and cold. Montreal is windier, though, as it's on an island.

I live in an off-island burb of Montreal and I'm quite happy living here.

I visited Ottawa a few times and quite frankly, I found it a tad boring, but that's just me.

Compared to Montreal, that's not surprising. Lol.

Ottawa is pretty cool. I used to go there every now and then when I lived in Montreal. Mainly to visit family friends. I never really got a chance to explore it well though. I hope to make back someday.

Ottawa is better than Toronto. Ottawa is so clean! One of the best cities no doubt.
