My only niece is turning one year old this month! Sadly, I am not geographically close to that part of my family, and of course I would like to send a gift for her birthday since I won't be attending the family party.

I don't have any children of my own and my experience around little ones is limited. What would be a good, useful, educational gift to send her? I was thinking of sending a small toy with maybe a story book or two. What are your favorites?

I am so tempted by the adorable clothes in the stores, but from my mom I know that my niece has more clothes than she could possibly wear. I don't want to buy something only to have it sit, unused, in her dresser.

TIA for helping out a loving, yet clueless, aunt!

If your family has an alma mater in common, you can go to their store and get her some baby accessories!

We do have an alma mater in common... however my brother is a HUGE sports nut so my little niece already has a few pieces of gear that she wears on game day.

Thanks for the suggestion though... please keep them coming!

Books are a great idea! Little children love to be read to...hopefully, someone will read your "gift" to her!

I wouldn't bother with clothes--they outgrow them too fast, at this age! A book or two is perfect!

I have to second the book idea. They take little space, they grow "with" kids and some become treasured favorites to be passed-down

Stick with a classic ("Winnie the Pooh", "Where the Wild Things Are", or perhaps some Beatrix Potter or Eric Caryle) and add a small plush toy.

It might be nice to include a gift for mom too. That first year can be a bear! A gift cert for a mani/pedi, a nice journal, some herbal tea....

what about a raggedy ann doll. Or for a toy the jack in the box was always fun, or a stuffed
teddy bear or dog.

I have seen some really cute nightlights recently.. like this soft ladybird one

Amazon.com: Cloud b Twilight Turtle - Constellation Night Light: Baby

Amazon is a useful site for looking at, as it shows bestseller toys, books etc by age group and has buyer reviews.

There is a Leapfrog toy called Fridge phonics that would be great. It can be put at her height on the fridge and when she pushes the letter it makes that letters sound and also sings a song. As she gets better with fine motor skills she can switch the letters on her own. Its a toy that can last awhile. On the box it says 24 months to 5 years but I think a one year old could still play with it. If not there are some other Leapfrog toys that could probably work.

When my oldest turned one we didn't have alot of money and I wanted to get her something cool. I took her to the store and got her a big bouncy ball. She loved it. Hours and Hours of fun.

There is a real cool book called "My Very Own Name" . It is personalized for the child's name. Each letter is related to an animal & the sound the animal makes.

It runs about $29.

My 3yr old has it & my 1yr old loves when I read it to him.

Dr. Suess books..Red Fish Blue Fish

Eric Carle...The Hungry Catepillar.
