The question is what do they need to be kept safe from?
It is far easier, and more successful in the long run, if you can allow them to play in a safe room than to keep them out of an unsafe part of a room.
Worried about fireplace edge? They make bumpers for those.
Worried about pulling over a piece of furniture? Secure it to the wall, or put it in storage until they are old enough to understand not to pull on it.
Worried about leaving the room? Put up gates at the hallways and doorways that lead out. (much like the pictures in post above)
Worried about them breaking things? Put them out of reach or in storage until they are older.
Worried about them making a mess of CDs, DVDs etc? Put them out of reach or in a different storage container that can be locked.
Worried about them crawling in same place as pets? Put the pets behind fences, closed doors, in kennels or outside.
Worried about them going up stairs? Use a gate at the bottom and top.
There is nothing like piece of mind when you need to run out of the room to use the bathroom, help another child, check on dinner, etc and know that your baby will be safe!
No room is completely childproof for an early toddler.
