Why do you think she isn't letting him see the children?

drugs on his part, no steady job, living with a friend that is a little "off" The kids are old enough to tell their mom what happens when they're with dad

This is probably the most 'telling' part of his situation. He knows why, but is ashamed to say it out loud, thus he doesn't fight for his rights as a father.

I think you made a wise decision to let this friendship fade.

Poor kids. I pray the momma is strong and can help the kids understand that this isn't their fault.

If you don't care about this friend, stop communication and ignore him. If you do care about him, try to help him.
